The Salvation Army backpack food assistance program is now sustained as a stand-alone program with funding provided by local community members. In 2015, the PCF partnered with Petersburg City Schools and Salvation Army to provide grant money that fills backpacks with food for kids and their families over the weekend. PCF continued to partner with others in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The program supports a basic need for local families with students predominantly in both the middle school and the elementary school. Between 2015-2016 the program grew to include six additional families, and the number provided now fluctuates between 20-25 backpacks.
