The Petersburg Community Foundation, an Affiliate of The Alaska Community Foundation, awarded $15,000 in grants to six outstanding programs in the Petersburg area this month. Grants addressed a range of community programs including: early childhood education, childhood hunger, domestic violence, arts, and journalism.
This year’s grantees:
Petersburg Children’s Center, Inc. – To complete necessary safety upgrades for their classroom expansion project. The expansion will allow an additional 20 children to attend the center who are currently on a wait-list.
Narrows Broadcasting Corp. (KFSK-FM) – To establish a Community Archive and Digital Public Record.
Petersburg Arts Council (Compass Theatre)- To replace the movie screen in the Wright Auditorium.
Petersburg Corps of the Salvation Army – To support the School Backpack Food Assistance Program. This program provides weekend food assistance for students who are fed by the school during the week.
Mitkof Island Dance Troupe – To provide need-based scholarships so any child who would like to participate in dance has an opportunity to attend. Scholarships cover cost of tuition, dance shoes, and costumes.
Working Against Violence for Everyone (WAVE) – To support continued operation of the 24-hr crisis hotline.
Established in 2008, the Petersburg Community Foundation, an Affiliate of The Alaska Community Foundation, has a permanent endowment established to sustain and improve the quality of life in the Petersburg area. The PCF has awarded over $65,000 to support various projects such as the purchase of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) materials for pre-schoolers, new physical therapy equipment at the medical center, summer reading program at the Library, and many others.
